Riding the Software Intelligence in Two-wheelers

motorcycle

I remember as a child it used to be great fun and exciting to watch some one riding a Rajdoot, Bullet, or Yezdi Bike. Even today Motorcycles represent “heroism” in films, whether it’s a James Bond or Rocky riding it!

Driven by emission norms, safety regulations and instrumentation standards, OEMs (Original Equipment Manufacturer) upgraded motorcycles with sophisticated technology in the last decades. All the features what we talk about (Electronic variable valve control, dual injector, Turbo/Super charger, Traction control, TFT clusters, eSIM etc..) in passenger cars are also present in two-wheelers.

“Two-Wheeler and Powersports” is the business unit responsible for two-wheeler business in Bosch. With Innovative technology and smart software, Bosch Global Software Technologies (BGSW) in collaboration with “Two-Wheeler and Powersports” work across three broad domains – Powertrain systems & Electrification, Safety & Assistance systems, Connectivity systems & instrumentation- to make these dream machines cleaner and more efficient, safe, connected, and fun to ride. We strive to achieve Zero accidents, zero stress in line with Bosch’s vision for the future of mobility.

BGSW is the backbone of “Two-Wheeler and Powersports” in developing software and electronic hardware for the global two-wheeler market. We lead & apply cutting-edge software technologies ranging from pure embedded software, model-based development, automation, virtualization, graphical interface development, communication technologies to AIoT for two-wheeler systems.

Powertrain systems & Electrification

Electronic engine management systems are the core for more efficient technology which helps two-wheeler and powersport vehicle manufacturers to reduce emissions. BGSW engineers are responsible for delivering software & hardware development of Engine Control Units (ECU) for high displacement and multi cylinder motorcycles in the developed markets and smaller one-cylinder motorcycles in emerging markets, making injection systems more intelligent

With its drives and Drive Control Units for electric two-wheelers, Bosch creates the technical basis for a safe and efficient riding experience. BGSW engineers are responsible for delivering the software for Drive control units which ensures optimal motor response and power delivery.

Safety and Assistance systems

Motorcycle ABS (antilock braking system) supports the rider while braking in critical riding situations. It prevents wheel lockup, ensures vehicle stability and optimal deceleration while braking. Motorcycle Stability Control (MSC) technology enhances vehicle safety and stability during both braking and accelerating and while either riding straight or cornering. BGSW engineers are responsible for delivering the software and hardware solutions for both ABS and MSC, which form the core of the safety system.

Like ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance Systems) in passenger cars, motorcycle engineers at Bosch developed ARAS (Advanced Rider Assistance Systems) which enables safety and comfort functions like adaptive cruise control, blind spot detection and forward collision warning.

Connectivity systems, services, and Instruments

The feature-rich, user-friendly displays from Bosch make motorcycle riding a fascinating and safe experience with enhanced convenience. Bosch’s sophisticated display solutions provide vehicle information with exceptional clarity and are complemented by the mySPIN smartphone integration solution enabling safe access to intuitive smartphone content - before, during, and after the ride.

BGSW engineers in collaboration with Bosch global infotainment teams have been developing the software solutions for the Integrated Connectivity Clusters for both premium & mid-range motorcycle segments.

Connectivity is revolutionizing motorcycles. The world is going digital and so are the two-wheelers. BGSW engineers together with the business unit “Two-wheeler and Powersports” have expertise in domains & AIML work on telematics devices and connected solutions to develop exciting features.

What the future looks like

As BGSW engineers work together across domains, synergies are derived to develop new features across domains. By adopting the latest technologies and making the best use of current technologies, we would be shaping the intelligence in the future two-wheelers with smart software solutions.
